摘要

Common dayflower (Commelina communis L.), a member of the Commelinaceae family, is a serious weed of soybean. This is an annual plant and usually occurs in fertile and moist soil in shady areas and is often mistaken as a dicot due to its attractiveblue and white flowers. Another species of the weed, namely, C. benghalensis has an allelopathic potential to reduce germination and seedling vigour of soybean, maize (Singh et al., 1989) and wheat (Uppar et al., 1993). It regenerates from stem cuttingsand produces seeds as long as there is at least one node (Chivinge and Kawisi, 1989). The weed also acts as an alternate host to insect, Pycnoderes medius (Johnson, 1997) and is difficult to control with recommended herbicides of soybean. For sustainableproduction of soybean, an integrated weed management strategy is necessary to minimize the ill effects of weed. To achieve this goal, the lowest weed density of specific weed (such as common dayflower) and weed complexes that will reduce soybean yield significantly needs to be known so that suitable weed management strategies can be developed. The present study was undertaken with the objective to determine the effect of varying densities of common dayflower on growth and yield of soybean.
