Changes in Biodiversity of Native Flora of Kerala Due to Infestation of Mimosa invisa Mart.

Mimosa invisa Mart, (family Mimosaceae) called creeping sensitive weed, an alien invasive plant from South America, spreading fast is a serious menace both in cropped and non-cropped lands of Kerala. It is heliophytic and rapidly occupies open areas like road sides, sides of railway tracks, banks of irrigation and drainage channels and waste lands. It creates problems in annuals like banana, tapioca, upland paddy and pastures as well as in perennials like mango, coconut and tea. It was first reportedby Nair (1964) from Perunna near Changanachery in Kerala. A survey conducted to find the extent and nature of spread of M. invisa all over Kerala revealed the spread of the weed to all the 14 districts of Kerala, with intensity ranging from sporadic tosevere. Infestation of the weed was very severe in both plains and high altitudes of Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palghat districts of the state. Ability of M. invisa to climb any available support (trees, staywires, advertisement/location boards, etc.) and to occupy the upper most layer of canopy smothering any native vegetation contributes to its adverse effects on biodiversity. Considering the extensive nature of spread and smothering efficiency of the plant, a study was conducted to learn the impact of M invisa on the biodiversity of the existing vegetation in the areas of its infestation.
