The heat treatment of components for automotive and track manufacturing continues to benefit from the implementation of induction heating technology. One case in point is the production of suspension components for heavy truck trailers, where the heat treatment is directly related to the safety and life expectancy of these components. In this article we will review a process for the complete heat treatment in the manufacture of trailer axles. Through-hardening (also known as quench and temper) is a process used to produce high-strength components when the entire part needs to be hardened. Traditionally, this type of heat processing has been accomplished via gas-fired furnaces. This through-hardening process requires more energy, long residence times, creates significantly greater amounts of scale and produces an end product with lower ductility.
