Fungicides for the control of foliar diseases in sugar beet: fungicidal and physiological effects.

Since 1997, triazole fungicides have largely replaced sulphur for the control of sugar beet foliar diseases on the c. 65 per cent of the crop area treated each year in the UK. In trials during this period where powdery mildew (Erysiphe betae) was severe, single full-rate applications of flusilazole+carbendazim (Punch C) and cyproconazole (Cabaret), applied in late July, gave yield increases of up to c. 9 adjusted tonnes ha-1 over untreated control plots. In 12 trials where disease occurred at low levels or was absent, average yield increases of 4 adjusted tonnes ha-1 (5%) over untreated plots were achieved. This apparent direct physiological effect of fungicides was accompanied by observations of enhanced green leaf retention in the autumn. Studies of leaf chlorophyll content and photosynthetic efficiency were made on plots treated with sulphur (to control powdery mildew) supplemented with either the triazole, Punch C, or a strobilurin fungicide, Comet (pyraclostrobin). Both physiological processes were enhanced in leaves in the mid-canopy in September, compared to plants treated with sulphur alone. The results indicated that senescence was delayed in those leaves that were still actively contributing to sugar accumulation during this period..
