Integrated weed management in pearlmillet (Pennisetum typhoides)

Pearlmillet [Pennisetum typhoides (Burn) S. and H.] is dual-purpose rainy season crop of northwest India. The emergence and competition of carpetweed (Trianthema portulacastrum L.) and barnyard grass (Echinochloa colona L.) reduced yield of this crop to an extent of 16 to 94 percent (Umrani et al., 1980). For control of weeds, several methods have been tried with varying degrees of success, which include hand weeding, hoeing, intercropping and use of herbicides. An integrated approach of weed control is necessary where cultural methods in combination with chemical methods are tried. Upadhyay et al. (1981) found that pre-emergence application of atrazine at 1.0 kg ha~(-1) + one weeding at six week stage of the crop produced maximum yield which wassignificantly superior to the recommended practice of two weedings+two hoeings at three and six week stages of the crop. The present investigation was undertaken to study the effect of various methods of weed control on growth and yield of pearlmillet and extent of increase in yield due to weed control by various methods.
