Effect of soil solarization on weed density and growth of chilli, brinjal and marigold

摘要

Soil Solarization is a method of heating surface by using plastic sheets placed on moist soil to trap solar radiation and soil disinfestation. The process increases the soil temperatures by 8-12 deg C over the corresponding non-mulched soil (Hosmaniand Meti, 1993) and causes injurious effects on weeds. The response varies with weed species. Many annual species are sensitive and most perennials are resistant. Weed seeds are stimulated to germinate in the moist and warm soil and the young seedlings are killed by the heat. Remaining weed seeds may be weakened and colonized by the saprophytic organisms. Upto 90 percent control of weeds and 46 percent kill of weed seeds with soil Solarization for 31 days was reported by Upadhyay and Gogoi (1993).
