摘要

Most animal outputs in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) come from small-scale, mixed crop-livestock rain-fed systems. More than 200 million people are involved in such systems. During the past ten years, research programmes under the Department for International Development Renewable Natural Resources Research Strategy (DFID RNRRS) have made major investments in increasing crop and livestock productivity in priority production systems in SSA. However, full realization of the benefits from this substantial research effort has been hampered by the historical lack of cross-disciplinary linkages and cross-sectoral approaches. Systems-based approaches to more efficient and effective use of farm-produced fodder in African crop-livestock systems are urgently needed to meet the increased demand for animal products. This analysis of over 100 relevant DFID RNRRS research projects highlights the technical, institutional and policy lessons learnt and identifies opportunities, embedded in systems-based approaches, for more enlightened use of crop-based feeds to increase productivity, improve livelihoods, and reduce malnutrition and poverty to the benefit of millions of poor people in SSA..
