Soil Conservation / Cultivation Measures During Formative Period of Tea

In North East India tea is grown over vast area comprising of land with varied topography from flat, and nearly flat (plateau) to steep hill slopes. On hills tea is normally grown on the spur & sloping sides of the ridges up to an elevation of 2000 m(a.m.s.I.). The soils in plains as well as in slopy land are subjected to vagaries of nature. Again to impart final frame formation prune young tea requires to pass critical period of about 4-5 years. During this period for want of complete ground coverwith bush canopy soil remains exposed to sun and rain which is not at all desired for successful plantation. Loss to soil structure, soil erosion, loss of humus and soil fertility are some serious problems associated with tea soil. Unlike other agriculturists tea planters desire to do away with the terracing, as they are difficult to maintain. However, this is likely to enhance the problem of erosion during the first few years if adequate care is not taken. Therefore, to keep up sustained growth and productivity of tea it is important to adopt soil conservation measures judiciously. These along with other cultivation measures which contribute towards the success of young tea and lay the foundation for sustained high yield are discussed here.
