The global photovoltaic (PV) solar industry has grown in an impressive and unprecedented way in the last 10 years. It has mushroomed from a global capacity of 471MW in 2002, to 31GW in 2012, but this growth is now forecast to slow - a fact which has sent ripples through the industrial minerals markets which serve this industry. The solar market, which consumes silicon carbide (SiC) for wafer slicing, fused silica for crucibles, and high purity quartz and soda ash for the cells, has seen a spate of falling prices in the last 12 months.
