Results are presented for the first year of the potato cyst nematode (PCN) testing services provided by the Nematology team, Plant Pest and Disease Programme at the Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera) for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Potato Cyst Nematode Testing Services contract. Soil samples were taken from prospective seed potato land, and ware fields where the crop is destined for export. The procedures used to extract the PCN from the soil samples and identify the cysts to species are discussed. Only 1.41 % of samples were positive for PCN, with 91.5% of these originating in ware land. The new PCN Council Directive 2007/33/EC came into force 1 July 2010 requiring more intensive sampling of prospective seed potato land, and ware land will be sampled as part of an annual survey. The Fera laboratories, including Molecular Testing Unit, are investigating new equipment and molecular tools to develop our service in the future.
