Many previous studies aimed at quantifying the risk of drift from boom sprayers have used airborne spray profiles measured in wind tunnel conditions and based on either a vertical profile at a distance of 2.0 m downwind or a horizontal profile measured immediately above the tunnel floor at distances up to 7.0 m from a single nozzle. Although some correlation between parameters derived from these two types of measurement has been demonstrated for defined types of nozzle, it is likely that no generalised relationship exists between the two approaches. As part of work to classify the performance of agricultural spray nozzles, it has been proposed that a single measure of drift risk should be used based, if possible, on a combination of the two types of measurement. Making detailed measurements of airborne flux at different distances and different heights in wind tunnel experiments could involve large numbers of samplers and hence relatively high costs. The study reported in this paper examined the sensitivity of the combined vertical and horizontal flux profiles measured in standardised wind tunnel conditions with a range of nozzle types and spray liquids to the number and arrangement of passive sampling lines used in the tunnel. The results showed that for the conditions used in the study, a two dimensional drift surface could be determined based on twelve passive sampling lines deployed downwind from a single nozzle. Methods of linking this drift surface to established measures of drift risk are presented together with methods by which such results can be interpreted.
