Granular applications are generally considered to be free of emissions like drift. The presence of dust particles however increases the risk of downwind deposits onto surface waters. To investigate drift hazard for dust particles from granular applications, a simulation study was carried out using the IDEFICS spray drift model. Two granular application techniques were considered: a spinning disc technique and a boom spreader. Downwind deposits for various dust particle sizes were investigated. Weighted deposits onto the three water bodies (ditch, stream and pond) defined by the FOCUS Surface Water group were calculated. Weather conditions were chosen to be realistic worst case. The results indicated that for a boom spreader 3% of the applied dosageof granules may reach the surface of a ditch or stream, and 0.2% may reach the pond surface. For a spinning disc technique these figures are 1.5% and 0.2%, respectively. Downwind deposit rates were sensitive to changes in wind velocity, while rather insensitive to changes in atmospheric stability.
