In this issue of INFECTION we start with a new section. The focus of this section is to present infectious diseases with a focus on visual aspects of the infection. While the diagnosis of infectious diseases relies on the integration of information from various sources including physical examination, laboratory studies in hematology, chemistry, immunology and microbiology, visual inspection of the patient remains a key source of information. Obviously, it is not possible to make all diagnosis just based on the inspection of the skin, mucus membranes or body shapes such as swollen joints, edemas, protruding abscesses. We also need to examine x-rays, MRIs, CT-scans and other modern imaging studies.
