The petroleum industry and the Defense Department are opposing a draft EPA risk study expected to label naphthalene,a ubiquitous chemical compound widely used as a fuel additive,as a "likely" carcinogen.The industry is warning such an assessment could result in costly new cleanup requirements and health and safety standards.Naphthalene used to be the primary component of military jet fuel and is still widely used as a fuel additive,and in producing Pharmaceuticals,textile chemicals,lubricants,explosives,plasticizers,insect repellents,dyes,resins,leather tanning agents and pesticides.It is a natural component of fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum and is refined for use in a broad array of commercial and consumer products.According to market analysts,408,000 metric tons of naphthalene was consumed in 2003 in the United States,Western Europe and Japan.
