摘要

Polytrauma is defined as an injury to at least two organ systems leading to a potentially life threatening condition . The majority of patients with polytrauma are adults between 20 and 30 years of age with a predominance of the male gender . Recent developments in all the allied medical disciplines have expanded our understanding of the events regulating the immediate physiological reaction and subsequent events following trauma. At the molecular level, key mediators and cells interact whilst the patient enters a state of physiological crisis, being at increased risk of mortality. Complex mechanisms are activated and this is the norm after injury [19]. All these physiological processes represent the body's attempt to maintain homeostasis. Fundamental principles for good management of these patients include the prompt support of vital organ functions at the scene of the accident, recognition of life-threatening injuries in the trauma room the subsequent formulation of stepwise priorities and application of appropriate surgical procedures .
