摘要

A 65-year-old female with a history of breast cancer 10 years previously was admitted to hospital with a month's history of nausea, vomiting, weight loss and jaundice. She had multiple hepatic lesions and hepatic failure with a serum biliru-bin of 200 |imol/l. A biopsy confirmed metastatic breast carcinoma and she was commenced on carboplatin and pac-litaxel chemotherapy. After two treatments, she presented with fulminant hepatic failure and subsequently died. This blood film was examined six days before her death and demonstrated large numbers of Cabot rings (arrows) and target cells without basophilic stippling. The patient's haemoglobin concentration was 129 g/1 with an MCV of 91 fl. Serum B12 and folate levels were normal at 814 pmol/1 and >3806 nmol/ml, respectively.
