In the Images in Haematology section of this journal, Wettle et al (2012) described a case in which the diagnosis of AL amyloidosis was made following the finding of a bleeding diathesis of the skin and, in particular, the appearance of cutaneous petecchiae after minimal trauma. Although these signs can be present in various clinical conditions, the patient also had spontaneous peri-orbital purpura, which is clinically suggestive of amyloidosis.
