BRUSSELS - Revelations that U.S. security agencies are targeting foreign citizens' Internet activity using data collected by major technology companies could end up impacting U.S. companies as the European Union moves to tighten existing rules on data protection that U.S. firms say are already problematic, according to business sources here. The EU has been in the process of developing a new Data Protection Regulation for several years, and it could be finalized as early as 2014, according to European officials. The proposal remains under discussion between members of the European Parliament and the European Commission.
