The opening of the communist countries to the rest of the world more than 15 years ago could have been the beginning of a rapid growth in technology companies,fuelled by a mix of innovative scientific ideas,new motivation and competitive pricing.However,the arrival of competition geared towards a capitalist model obliterated many of the fledgling initiatives to use the technological expertise of state-owned companies and transfer them into the newly opened markets.One of survivors of this period is Tescan sro(Brno,Czech Republic),a private company manufacturing scanning electron microscopy(SEM)instruments,although the path to success has not been smooth,Jaroslav Klima,managing director of Tescan,told Instrumenta.
