Earnings at PerkinElmer Inc (Wellesley, MA) fell sharply in the second quarter of calendar 2008 as substantial charges and costs ate away at the company's bottom line. Strong demandfor its life science products helped sales grow by 21% from the same period last year or 16% at constant currencies, to 528.6 million. However, depreciation and amortisation charges, and stock-option compensation costs drove earnings down 30% to 23.7 million.
