Caliper Life Sciences Inc(Hopkinton,MA),a provider of life science instrumentation,has sold two non-core product lines,its Pharmaceutical,Development and Quality Analysis(PDQ)line and the AutoTrace~R solid phase extraction(SPE)line,for a total consideration of 21 million to SOTAX AG(Basel,Switzerland)and Dionex Corp(Sunnyvale,CA),respectively.The divestitures(more details on page 8)and the closure of two manufacturing sites in Mountain View and Alameda(with total savings of 9.4 million),are to help Caliper to reach profitability,a goal that since the acquisition of laboratory robotic expert Zymark in 2003(see Instrumenta 20(5)1)has eluded the company.
