摘要

A great deal has been said about the potential for nanotechnology to reshape our lives, with new materials offering hitherto-impossible properties. And while there have been some interesting developments, the biggest payoffs from nanotechnology are still in the future. This article will take a look at the technology, give some examples of current applications, and suggest where things may go in the future. First, it's important to realize that the term "nanotechnology," which is defined as the creation of materials, devices and systems through the manipulation of individual atoms and molecules, and deals with structures generally less than 100 nanometers (nm) in size, covers a field so broad that to ask the question in 2005, "What are the implications of nanotechnology?" is akin to asking a century ago, "What are the implications of electricity?" Certainly, the market potential is enormous. A report from Business Communications Co., Inc. (BCC), "RGB-290 Nanotechnology: A Realistic Market Evaluation," states that the total global demand for nanoscale materials, tools and devices was estimated at USD7.6 billion in 2003 and is expected to grow at a 30.4% compound annual growth rate, reaching USD28.7 billion in 2008. So how small is a nanometer? A nanometer (nm) is one billionth of a meter, or about the size of four carbon atoms. The wavelength of orange light is 600 nm. The diameter of a human hair is about 80 micrometers (microns), or 80,000 nanometers. So a nanometer is 1/80,000 the diameter of a human hair.
