Ultrasonic testing can trace its origins to about 1929 when Sokolov and Mtilhauser (Refs. 1, 2) used a version of transmit/receive piezo-elements to measure the transmitted intensity to detect laminations in plate. This makes ultrasonic testing of materials less than 100 years old. The original Sokolov apparatus used a meter to indicate sound pressure amplitude. Therein lies one of the most obvious changes we have seen since the first ultrasonic test method - equipment. We have not "invented" new waves or angles; they existed, we just had to find ways to use them. And we did. We have used compression (longitudinal) waves, shear (transverse) waves, Rayleigh waves, and plate waves, to name a few. It has been the method in which we display the information provided by these waves that has seen the biggest changes since Sokolov's intensity meter. This has been provided by a steady change in instrumentation as other technologies also advanced. We moved from vacuum-tube oscilloscope instruments with magnetic deflection plates and ink plotters, to pulser-receivers with computer control and computer data acquisition, all within 50 years of the first application.
