Bacterial contamination of 80 samples of 16 brands (9 Australian, 3 French, 2 Greek and 2 Indonesian) of mineral water were determined. Five media (plate count agar, nutritionally reduced R2A agar, Pseudomonas agar with the supplement SR 103, Pseudomonas agar without the supplement and King's B medium) were evaluated for the isolation of these bacteria from mineral waters, along with the bio-Merieux ATB 32GN and Biolog GN systems for their rapid computer assisted identification. 46 samples of 11 brands contained pseudomonads and related bacteria (10-106 cfu/ml). Brevundimonas vesicularis (65-106 cfu/ml) and Methylobacterium mesophilicum (10-105 cfu/ml) were isolated from 12 and 14 samples, respectively. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was detected in 1 brand (up to 106 cfu/ml). Acidovorax delafieldii, Burkholderia cepacia, Burkholderia pickettii, Comamonas testosteroni, Flavimonas oryzihabitans, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas mendocina, Sphingomonas paucimobilis and Xanthomonas maltophilia were alsoisolated. The widest range of growth of pseudomonads and other bacteria occurred on plate count agar and R2A.
