POLYMORPHISM IN RELATION TO BUFFALO MILK PRODUCTION

Serum samples of three hundred and eighteen Murrah buffaloes were typed for transferrin (TF) and albumin (Alb) using disc gel electrophoresis. Five transferrin phenotypes (Tf-DD, Tf-KK, Tf-DK, Tf-KN, Tf-DN) and three albumin phenotypes (Alb-SS, Alb-FS, Alb-FF) were observed to be controlled respectively by three and two co-dominant alleles. The gene frequency was found highest for Tf (0.54) and Alb (0.61) alleles, Buffaloes having Tf-DD phenotypes produced maximum milk (2930.40kg) in a lactation witha peak of 14kg, while buffaloes with Alb-FF phenotypes on the other hand recorded 2695 30kg milk production with a peak of 13.20kg it was suggested that polymorphic studies could be used efficiently as gene markers for the future selection of high yielder animals at an early age.
