The German luxury automaker, Mercedes Benz, is hoping that Indian research expertise will enable it to beat out its competitors BMW and Volkswagen, by boosting the workforce to 2,000 employees by 2015. It currently has 1,200 employees working at its Bangalore and Pune units. Mercedes Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) will continue to work on all Benz vehicles and will additionally undertake research work for Daimler vans and trucks. The company's R&D division has 21,000 employees globally, with India accounting for about 10% of its R&D workforce.
