Regardless of where you fall in your estimation of global warming or your fears about running out of oil, it's clear that for automakers, there is wisdom in preparing for a future without carbon-based fuels. The hope is that hydrogen can sustain mobility and take the onus off cars for depleting nonrenewable resources, fouling the air, and warming mother earth. Leave it to BMW to come up with a viable alternative to fuel cells, electric propulsion, and storage batteries. BMW's proposal is to fuel the internal combustion engines we know and love with hydrogen. Following twenty-five years of lab work, a production run of 100 Hydrogen 7 demonstration vehicles is ready for evaluation. I was one of the first volunteers to drive one around Berlin.
