In cooperation with Sandvik Mining and Construction Materials Handling examinations where conducted at the Chair of Conveying Technology and Design Methods of the University of Leoben, Austria, on a new system for a 90 deg belt deflection. This system consists of two stationary pulleys - one for the carrying belt, one for the return belt - with a grid of holes in the pulley shell. Pressurised air is forced through these holes and into the space between belt and pulley. By use of this technique it becomes possible to change the travel direction of the belt by 90 deg (or even more) on least possible space. Although the redirecting angle can become smaller or larger than 90 deg by use of this new system, this paper focuses on the examination conducted on a test rig using 90 deg only.
