摘要

The pod borer Helicoverpa armigera is an economically significant pest; damage caused by this pest on chickpea ranges up to 84.4% with an average of 7.0% in different states, and under different farming systems (Lateef 1992). Thus far, pest control strategies have relied on chemical insecticides only. This unidimensional approach to pest control has led to many repercussions, among them the development of resistance to insecticides (Challaiah 1988). Thus, the development of resistant cultivars wouldreduce the need for chemical insecticides, prevent environmental pollution, and above all, involve no extra cost to farmers. Resistant genotypes are especially important in crops with low value per unit area.
