An early vigor spontaneous mutant H 82-2 (M) was isolated from the population of cultivar H 82-2 during the 1993/94 postrainy season (Fig. 1). The progenies of this mutant were studied for true breeding habit and morpho-physiological characters (Table1). This mutant showed fast early growth (shoot length 13.41 cm compared to 6.52 cm for H 82-2) possibly because of long internodal distance of 3,38 cm (15-day seedlings); the mutant also showed earliness in flowering, pod initiation, and maturity. In chickpea, early growth and vigor can be important in providing increased biomass. Considerable losses are observed because of stiff competition of the crop with weeds, particularly in irrigated and late-sown conditions.
