Grafting has been successfully used in horticultural plants to obtain a root stock with such desirable traits as resistance to soilborne diseases, or to other adverse soil factors. Recently, grafting has also been used to study the role of root in controlling ion accumulations under salt stress (Grattan and Maas 1985). Chickpea is sensitive to salinity but studies have indicated variations and some scope for genetic improvement in this crop for salt tolerance (Dua 1992, Dua and Sharma 1995). To study the possibility of grafting in assessing root and shoot control for salinity tolerance in chickpea, reciprocal grafting was attempted between scions and root stocks of a tolerant and a sensitive genotype.
