Among the several factors causing low yields of pigeonpea, the damage caused by insect pests is the most important. Maximum economic damage is caused by the insect pests feeding upon pigeonpea flowers and pods— the pod-borer complex, comprising of the gram pod borer, Helicoverpa armigera, tur plume moth, Exelastis atomosa, and the tur pod fly, Melanogromyza obtusa. Although insecticidal applications have been recommended for controlling the pod-borer complex (Gosalwad et al. 1992), the increasing concern for the environment, development of insect resistance to insecticides (Armes et al. 1992), and the emerging trend towards organic farming have driven the search for effective and ecofriendly alternatives. In this context, several workers have explored the utility of neem as a potential source for managing the pod-borer complex of pigeonpea (Sachan and Lal 1990). Similarly, cow-urine and cow-dung have been reported to be effective for insect control (Peries 1985, Rankin 1986). However, since information on their performance is lacking, the present investigation was undertaken.
