Screening Chickpea Against Helicoverpa armigera under Rainfed Conditions in the Bastar Region of Madhya Pradesh, India

Chickpea cultivation is increasing in the rice fallows of Bastar Plateau Zone of Madhya Pradesh among tribal farmers there, but the crop is severely damaged by the pod borer Helicoverpa armigera. Pod-borer damage at the podding stage is extensive, ranging from 50% to 100% (Rawat et al, 1979, Bhatoagar et al. 1996). Systemic insecticidal formulations have been reported by various workers to control H. armigera on chickpea (Sinha et al. 1983, Rizvi et al. 1986). In the Bastar Plateau Zone (situated inthe southeastern comer of Madhya Pradesh, between 17°48' and 20°30'N, and 80°15' and 82°15' E) the use of insecticides is extremely low since the farmers are poor. Therefore, recommending varieties resistant to or tolerant of the pod borer is a suitable technology in this region. Hence, field trials were carried out to screen chickpea varieties against the pod borer during the postrainy seasons of 1993-94 and 1994-95 under rainfed conditions.
