12 Barbari goats (18 months of age, 18.9 kg body weight) were offered sun-dried maize forage at 100 (T-1), 125 (T-2) or 150% (T-3) of maintenance energy requirements over a preliminary period of 60 days followed by a 7-day digestion trial. DM intake(g/kg W0.75) increased from 48.7 in T-1 to 55.2 and 61.2 G in groups T-2 and T-3, respectively, with a corresponding increase in intake of digestible DM, TDN and digestible CP (P<0.05). The concentrations of total N, TCA-precipitable N and total volatile fatty acids were higher (P<0.05) in goats on dietary levels T-2 and T-3 than T-1. However, the pH and NH3 N values of rumen liquor did not vary significantly among the groups. The estimated animal production per unit of forage offered was maximum (6.9g/kg W0.75/day) when feed was offered at 150% of maintenance requirements.
