Data on meat production in Assam between 1987 and 1993 were analysed. During 1986-87, 30.86, 28.51, 23.51 and 14.26% of meat was from cattle, pigs, poultry and goats, the respective values for 1991-92 were 30.75, 29.17, 20.31 and 16.14%. Productionincreased with an annual increment of meat given by the linear function Yt = 12.746 + 0.107 t as 0.107 thousand tonnes. But due to an concomitant increase in population size, it was observed that the shortfall in requirement of meat by the State also increased year after year. The population of Assam was 2.24 crores in 1991 (with >90% non-vegetarian) and was predicted to grow to 2.7 crores in the year 2000. The requirement of meat for the State was calculated on the basis of these figures.
