Blood samples were collected from 8 non-cycling Murrah buffalo heifers, 3 years of age, before and after a single cutaneous injection of bromocryptine (100 ng/kg body weight). Plasma prolactin concentrations before treatment were between 343.42?4.27 and 461.15?19.24 ng/ml and decreased (P<0.01) to 7.95?.33 ng/ml the day after bromocryptine treatment. Plasma progesterone concentrations showed that 7 out of the 8 heifers had phasic progesterone secretion suggesting the presence of functional corpus luteum, however, they were not expressing behavioural signs of oestrus. Mean oestrogen concentrations which were 6.69?.91 pg/ml on the day of bromocryptine injection rose to 13.21?.75 pg/ml on the day after injection. It is suggested that, though theheifers may have been cycling endocrinologically, high prolactin levels interfered with the normal synthesis of oestrogens necessary for expression of behavioural symptoms of heat.
