In manufacturing cell formation, attempts are made to achieve full manufacturing decomposition without interactions between the different cells. However, such a decomposition is difficult to obtain. One way is to consider that the product and manufacturing data can exist jointly. This paper presents an alternative approach to manufacturing cell formation using such features as vectors of information transmission, and fuzziness to improve the problem formulation robustness. The fuzzy part - feature and fuzzy feature - machine relationships are used to establish the fuzzy part- machine relationship. The decomposition of the fuzzy part-machine relationship, represented by the corresponding matrix, yields the initial configuration of manufacturing cells. A block seriation approach is used to perform the decomposition. The final configuration is obtained using the fuzzy concepts of completeness and discrimination. As a result of using features and fuzziness, alternative process routings can be used. Another advantage of using features is the simplification of a new part-cell assignment based on feature characteristics.
