The increasing bandwidth of new telecommunication networks such as the Internet and the capabilities of computing technologies such as XML, Web Services, Service Oriented Architectures and Event-Driven Architectures have led to the creation of a real-time, extended enterprise vision. According to this vision, the extended enterprise consists of a network of partner organizations using software-supported cross-organizational collaboration to achieve their business goals. Such collaboration requires a high degree of integration between the partners' business processes and the ability to react quickly to business events related to their interactions. These business events can be either related to the existing operational interactions or can be triggered by the need to add to or modify the existing architecture and business rules, reflecting the evolutionary character of business interactions.
