Cooling towers in the blast furnace gas cleaning unit in the Egyptian Iron and Steel Company (EISCO) are used to remove heat from the gas washing water.The basic problem of water chemistry is to protect the cooling system from corrosion,scale formation and fouling from silt and microbiological growth.The aim of this work is to study the properties of the water used to clean and cool the furnace gases,which cause blocking and corrosion of cooling tower pipelines,and to investigate the most appropriate and economic methods to treat the water so that it can be recycled.Properties examined include the content of suspended solids,the water hardness in the settling unit,and the zinc content of scales.Jar test experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of three inorganic coagulant agents and three kinds of polyelectrolyte for the removal of suspended solids.Anionic flocculants proved the most effective.The mean zinc content in the water was decreased by the use of coagulant aids and because zinc is adsorbed on the iron oxide surface.This decreases scale formation in the pipelines.
