Immunogenetics in haematology and stem cell transplantation

European Commission supported medical projects facilitate the translation of basic research into clinical practice. This is especially seen in rapidly developing specialties including the transplantation of haematopoietic stem cells. In this field the projects were aimed at increasing the number of patients that could benefit from haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and implementing new technologies that could increase the rate of patients enjoying long-term disease-free survival post-transplantation. The decreasing size of families, especially in Europe, has increased the demand for transplantation of haematopoietic stem cells obtained from unrelated donors. Due to campaigns for unrelated donor registries and the positive response of society, there has been an increase in the pool of unrelated donors to almost 12 million volunteers worldwide. This increase is very fortunately associated with tremendous progress in immunogenetics after implementation of HLA DNA typing, which makes it possible to match donors and recipients on the basis of single nucleotides precisely describing the specificities in five loci of human leucocyte antigen (HLA). Studies that led to this successful approach were in Europe supported by the European Union.
