摘要

Many of the readers of this Journal will be familiar with the criticism from journal referees that parts of their cherished manuscript were 'too speculative'. In general, letting one's interpretation run too far ahead of the facts is to be discouraged, but every now and again it serves as a trigger for debate and as a springboard for further advances. In that spirit, we have invited a number of leading scientists in the field of immunogenetics to contribute short, speculative pieces we have termed 'Signposts'. In these we have asked them to give us their opinions on their field; they may single out existing issues for discussion, or may point towards the future direction along which they see the research developing. However, we hope that these will be provocative. You may applaud their views or you may violently disagree; if you do, we would welcome a cogent statement both of your reasons to differ, and of your alternative view.
