摘要

The 3rd IEEE Conference on Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology (SIIT2003, hereafter) was held in Delft, The Netherlands, from October 22-24, 2003. The conference started with a keynote address by Oliver Smoot, President of the International Standardization Organization (ISO), and a panel discussion on Standards' Implementation Problems, a discussion moderated by Jim Carlo, President-Elect of the IEEE Standards Association. The conference also had four invited speakers, namely John Hill of Sun Microsystems; John Ketchell, Director of CEN/ISSS; Jan van den Beld, Secretary-General of ECMA International; and Norbert Anselmann, Head of Standardisation Unit, European Commission. The program further included 23 interesting and diverse paper presentations which can be downloaded from www.siit2003.org/program.html. SIIT2003 was a success in many aspects. As purported, it brought together distinguished practitioners and academics across a wide range of businesses and disciplines, including engineering, economics, business and policy management, sociology, and law. The enthusiasm and the dedication of the partici-pants were remarkable: Almost all of the participants attended every single session of the conference for all three days. The same enthusiasm and dedication were carried on to meaningful gatherings and chats during informal social events, including a memorable Breughel Dinner with tales of standardization. Overall, I sensed that SIIT2003 was well organized and prepared, a success made possible by the 'visible hands' of the members of the local and international organizing committees, the advisory board, and the program committee. Especially, Tineke Egyedi, General Conference Chair, and the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management of the Delft University of Technology deserve our gratitude for this meeting and the logistic support.
