Has done research on the preparation of polyvinylidene fluoride membrane (PVDF) with a phase inversion method and immersion-precipitation technique using casting solution composition (PVDF/NMP/NH4Cl) % (w/w) 14.5/84/1,5 and non-solvent (H2O/C2H5OH) % (v/v) 75/25. In order to improve the hydrophilic properties and the ability in the separation of the textile dye indigo, PVDF membranes were modified by surface coating using chitosan. The results showed that the PVDF membrane surface modification process using chitosan, leads to changes in the pore structure of membrane from asymmetry (a combination of finger and sponge pore) into symmetry (dominance sponge pore). To determine the effect of chitosan concentration and method of coating to the pore size, mechanical strength, flux and rejection of PVDF membrane, vary the concentration of chitosan are superimposed, ie in the range of 0.5-2.5 % (w/v) and three methods coating, the immersion method, flux through the pore, and the combination (immersion - jetting). PVDF coated chitosan membranes produced in this study have a pore size range from 135.52 to 192.90 nm, which is 45.2% - 54.4% narrowed than before modification (247.3 nm). An increasingly PVDF membrane's ability to maintain pore size when the external load is applied, seem from the increasing value of young's modulus of PVDF membrane coated chitosan.
