The members of the society for the research of the barrier4ree taxi gathered on 1996 with intention of developing such a taxi that the disabled persons in the wheel-chair users can ride on easily and go out of home at anytime and at will and freely. Based on the reversion of the ordinary concepts, a taxicab equipped with an all-purpose lift has been developed, and is named as a "Universal-design taxi". This taxicab was placed in service operation in the streets of Tokyo as the ordinary commercial taxicab accessible to be a disabled person with the wheelchair in February, 1998, when the Paralympic Games were held.
