February 2013 marks the retirement of Peter Davis from employment as Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Nottingham. Peter has led a long and distinguished career in Orthopaedic and Trauma Nursing and this article aims to summarise some of his inspirational achievements. Peter's adult working life began as a comprehensive school teacher, teaching science in Luton, Bedfordshire. However, a few years later he contemplated a change in career and went to St. Mary's Hospital Paddington to train as a nurse -qualifying in 1980. On achieving a diploma (with distinction) in nursing he undertook a one-year Orthopaedic Nursing Certificate (ONC) at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH), Stanmore, UK. On completion of the course he took up a post as Charge Nurse on the orthopaedic trauma unit at Northwick Park Hospital, Middlesex. In 1984 he moved back to the RNOH to teach on the post-registration nursing course that he had previously attended as a student. This marked a renewed return to education but in a different environment to that at the start of his working life. It was in this post that Peter met his wife, Lorraine, who worked as an administrator in the school of nursing. They married in 1986 and have two children, Holly and Rowanne who recently gave birth to his granddaughter, Elsie.
