摘要

This award winning and innovative study attempted to determine whether body composition is associated with low back pain and/or disability. What is clear is that low back pain is a major public health problem. What is not clear is any association between non-specific low back pain and spinal abnormalities. The investigators rationale is that with increasing body weight there are increased mechanical demands on the spine leading to increased structural degeneration and therefore pain. However, previous studies have found only weak links between body weight or Body Mass Index (BMI) and low back pain. This study attempts to deepen this investigation by using measures of specific tissue composition, i.e. muscle versus fat mass, as opposed to gross measures of body mass.
