Seismic fragility curves for timber-framed masonry structures based on empirical damage data

Seismic actions exerted on a traditional timber-framed masonry structural system existing in Leukas, Greece during the 2003 earthquake (magnitude 6.2) revealed its antiseismic merits. All the buildings survived without reaching a collapse. The structural system of traditional timber-framed masonry of Leukas and its seismic performance are presented. The potential seismic vulnerability of these buildings is investigated using the statistical damage data collected during the post-earthquake surveys and applying regression analyses. Least-square methods are carried out; linear regression and subsequently, nonlinear regression. The latter is carried out using various algorithms. Empirical fragility curves in terms of peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV) and macroseismic intensity for the 2003 Leukas earthquake are generated. Comparisons and remarks are made for each methodology.
