A preliminary application of diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) for separation, identification andcharacterisation of metabolites of human lung carcinoma cell extracts, exhibiting different levels of multi-drugresistance (MDR) is reported. The results show the presence of at least three lipid components of different sizes in thelipophilic extracts which can not be identified by one- and two-dimensional NMR techniques. A number of metabolitesin the hydrophilic extracts of human lung carcinoma cell lines are successfully separated by different diffusivities. Theappearance in the DOSY spectra of different metabolites with the same diffusion coefficient is consistent with thembeing chemically bound together.
