Background: The USM Personality Inventory (USMaP-i) was designed to measure the Big-Five personality traits and it was found as a reliable and valid instrument to evaluate personality traits of prospective medical students. Objective: To determine stability of the USMaP-i in measuring personality traits of medical students across time and occasions. Methodology: A prospective cohort study was done on 196 first-year medical students. The USMaP-i was administered to the medical students at four intervals. The Cronbach's alpha and intra-class correlation analysis were applied to measure internal consistency and agreement level across intervals. The analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPPS) version 18. Result: A total of 196 first year medical students participated in this study. The overall Cronbach's alpha value of the USMaP-i over time and occasions ranged between 0.72 and 0.82. The Cronbach's alpha values of extroversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism and openness scales at different time and occasions ranged between 0.64 and 0.88. The intraclass correlation coefficient value of each personality domain ranged between 0.64 and 0.78. Conclusion: The USMaP-i had demonstrated a good level of stability and internal consistency to measure personality traits at different time and occasions. ? 2013 Japan International Cultural Exchange Foundation & Japan Health Sciences University.
