Introduction: While the importance of further investigation into the various aspects of mental health from a social medicine and clinical medicine perspective has been recognized, it should also be noted that there is an increasing need to investigate mental health services provided by public health centers. One such service is mental health and welfare consultations. We hereby report an in-depth investigation of recent mental health and welfare consultations trends at public health centers in Japan.Methods: We investigated the circumstances of mental health and welfare consultations at public health centers in Japan from fiscal 2007 to 2010. Based on the results, we then examined the importance of services from workers involved in mental health and welfare consultations at public health centers and the need for their improvement.Results and Conclusion: In recent years, the total number of mental health and welfare consultations at public health centers has been increasing. Among those, the number of such consultations by telephone or e-mail has also been on the rise. Although there is a trend towards a decrease or no change in the number of in-person consultations, the number of such consultations remains far from small. These trends and the current situation indicate the further need for cooperation among fields and institutions involved in providing such consultations.
